It would be a general Social Science Elective

Sorry, I'm just a little confused on what HTS means for credit. Does HTS humanities (Area C) exist?

2025-04-15 15:01:30 - Sonya A Boadu <sboadu3>

Per Dr. Allen Hyde, HTS 1XXX credit is fine. HTS can receive HTS elective credit because of history of gaming. Course is more of a humanities than social science and should not be applied to the social sciences.

HTS elective or should it remain FREE?

Sorry, I didn't realize that this system deletes the spacing of the note. I hope it's still readable.

(copy from email to registrar, they told me to submit here) I want to request a re-evaluation of a stale entry in the prereq database, namely MDIA 13 (Video Games and Popular Culture) for Foothill College, which is currently listed as free elective credit. The course is about the study and analysis of the history of video games and how it influenced popular culture - from the birth of the industry just after the end of WW2 to today. For example, the course covers topics such as: historical significance of video games: - the initial cultural stigma against video games - the spread of escapism and addiction caused by the advent of online gaming - global impact of game culture, such to the USSR (Tetris) - impact of video games on other culture such as books, films and vice-versa examples: Tron, WarGames, Neuromancer, Ender's Game the term "cyberspace" was coined this way discussion of controversial events such as: - patent ligitation by media conglomerates in the video game industry (e.g. Magnavox v. Atari in 1974) - the Atari video game burial (where Warner Brothers dumped millions of unused cartridges in the New Mexico Desert) - Columbine high school massacre (which caused a widespread moral panic and calls for regulation against video games, with government agencies claiming links between violent video games and school shootings) - Display of prostitution and violence in the new sandbox genre (Grand Theft Auto) causing yet another moral panic after the 9/11 terrorist attacks attempts to increase outreach within the gaming industry by methods such as targeted products or new input methods: - Ms. Pac Man - Music Genre: Dance Pads (Dance Dance Revolution), Rhythm Games (Easy Guitar) - Motion Control: Nintendo Wii's Blue Ocean Strategy - attracting families via family-friendly titles such as Wii Sports and low cost history of technological advancements: - CRTs (Cathode Ray Tube Amusement Device) - VCS - microprocessors (Intel 8080) - PC gaming (Commodore C64) - Laser Discs (birthed the "Interactive Movie" genre) - Consoles (NES/Famicom, Sega Master System) - CD-ROMs - The Future: Augmented & Virtual Reality This course is also cross-listed with HUMN 13. I strongly believe this course should be evaluated as social science or humanities credit. (I would prefer to recieve social science though).
